ABOUT GUAYAQUIL AND THE GUAYAS PROVINCE

Guayaquil: With its new image, it is the newest tourist spot that should not be missed. El Malecon (a wide waterfront avenue that runs alongside the River Guayas allows walking strolls with several attractions), shows the development that is having this city.
The River Guayas is the main avenue of water on the South American Pacific Coast, and the second in the entire continent, so the Guayaquileños are presenting to the world their best attraction.

Guayaquil, is the country's chief seaport and an active center for commerce and business related to the Agro exportation such as bananas, coffee, cacao, rice, soybean, sugar cane, cotton, exotic fruits and other tropical products. The people have the reputation to be lively, colorful, kind and hospitalary, maybe as a reflex of their warm weather, which always is around 24ºC.

Recently important tourist projects are being developed as malls, hotels that bring first class accommodations and the options to go shopping in establishments like the ones available in the United States.

It is a good option to make a trip to the closest beaches as Salinas or Montañita that have a growing infrastructure for the tourist.

Other attractions in Guayaquil:

Historical Park: Zoo for tropical species and the rescue of the traditions and history of the life in the countryside.

General Cemetery: With its dazzling, high-rise tombs and the ostentatious mausoleum of the rich, worth a visit.

Malecón del Estero Salado: A new pier is being built for the arms of the sea (El estero Salado - Salty estuary with water of the Pacific Ocean that arrives to Guayaquil through the Guayaquil Gulf).

Seminario Park: Watch the iguanas move freely among the people.

Centenario Park: Towering monument to the liberation of Guayaquil in 1820 and erected in 1920.

Botanical Gardens: Pleasant walk. Over 3000 plants, including 150 species of Ecuadorian and foreign orchids.

At one side of the River Guayas, is the hill Santa Ana where our history begins, the district Las Peñas is here and it is occupied mostly by artists and their wooden houses and narrow cobbled street show the last vestige of the colony. The church Santa Domingo, the first one founded in Guayaquil in 1548, stands just by Las Peñas.

Anthropological Museum: Excellent displays of ceramics, gold objects and paintings.

Banco del Pacifico Museum: Small museum mainly of archaeological exhibits.

There are six protected areas in the province, managed in distinct categories. The most important of these is the Churute Mangrove Ecological Reserve not far from Guayaquil - where a variety of mangrove species, dry forest, aquatic birds and associated fauna may be observed and studied.
